The voice of Mexican woman has always suffered minor setbacks in order to be heard, and over the centuries we see that the problem continues. The purpose of this research is to analyze the literary work of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, through her work which is written in the sixteenth century, yet it can still be used to identify certain characteristics presented in her writing, as well the way she acted before society, and most importantly the way she responds to men. Men to whom she felt that they could jeopardize her ability to continue studying and learning. Since that time she has helped influence a feminist identity based on a framework of reference created in a current time period. The analytical purpose towards the literary works written by “La Monja” Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, such as “Hombres necios”, La respuesta a Sor Filotea, and Los empeños de una casa are to analyze and make a connections between the feminist framework or reference that she influenced for women who came after her in the Mexican culture. Sor Juana's fundamental ideas are seen and represented in the feminist frame of reference for which she is often regarded as one of the greatest in Latin American literature. By connecting their influences on the letters, and poetry of Frida Kahlo and the lyrics of Lila Downs, the impact of women on Mexican culture can be seen over the centuries and the continuous need for their voices to be heard as well. These connections can be identified in the works and influences in both lyrical and literary form, since, much of Sor Juana’s work reflects similar concepts to Kahlo and Downs like their critique on society and identity of a free, “dangerous” and most importantly sure of herself, woman.
