MLO 4 Secondary Culture Other than Hispanic Cultures
In addition to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, the student demonstrates a general knowledge of a socio-cultural group other than a Hispanic one or mainstream American culture. The student develops a basic understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) – of the second culture.
4.1 Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of Hispanic cultures with a second culture other than those.
4.2 Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture other than Hispanic cultures.

Reflective Narrative Major Learning Outcome 4
Course Taken:
LAH: 4600 History of Brazil (FIU, Miami)
The Major learning outcome that this course taught me is the idea of the secondary culture, while deciding that I would be taking courses in Miami at Florida International University the class of a secondary culture was still up in the air, my advisor and I discusses the importance of seeing the diverse culture that a country like Brazil was. While at CSUMB I have a very small list of courses from a secondary culture that I could take so this being said when the opportunity came up and the idea of me being able to chose from various cultures was very good to hear.
The reasoning for why the selection, and the impact for the Brazil course being a secondary culture course was because the way that when talking to my advisor was said, the impact of Brasil in Latin america is huge, the on an economic, political and simply geographic level it is huge. Yet some people forget that Brazil is still part of Latin America because they do not speak the language. It has always intrigued me to see what were the cultural differences between Brazil verus the rest of Latin america because there seems to be more similarity.
This course helped me fulfill this MLO, because it was a way to better understand the way that Brazil impacts the rest of Latin america, and the world yet in a way how they demonstrate their importance in culture, even though they are Latinos, they have a different way of being seen and identified because of the way that they are of Portuguese colonial decent rather than the rest of Latin america being from Spanish Colonial descent. This experience was perfect because not only did I get to experience a different culture but an atmosphere as well my classmates where all so diverse, and the representation of the world was so vivid. The comparison and learning process to a second culture was made through the teachings of this course and Dr. Oelze, especially because the place where this was taught could not have been more diverse. Miami a cultural hub on its own, it was nice to hear on the social, historical, political and cultural impacts of the rest of other latin american countries that we are usually not exposed to here in California.
